CONTROL ROOM
The control that increases performance
Solutions that monitor processes and acquire data to increase efficiency and security.
An innovative Control Room project has been developed as part of the digital transformation journey Acquedotto Pugliese SpA (AQP) has undertaken over the years.
This system integrates cutting-edge technology with over a century of professional expertise, always serving the public water supply and its beneficiaries: the citizens.
The project’s three primary goals, which shaped the design and setup of the spaces, were the following: enhancing water resource protection , preventing anomalies, enabling quicker, more targeted interventions.
Additionally, predictive models needed to be developed to address the ongoing challenges of climate change and provide a comprehensive view of Apulia’s highly complex and extensive water system.
La Control Room di AQP è concepita come una “cabina The AQP Control Room is designed to collect, process, and manage millions of data points. It enhances monitoring and control activities for strategic processes within the Integrated Water Service, covering approximately 33,000 km of regional water and sewer networks. The goal is to protect a precious, increasingly threatened resource: water.
This system provides predictive maintenance analytics and manages the entire customer report cycle, improving response times. It also supports network rehabilitation efforts and loss reduction, promoting strategic, data-driven decisions.
In the future, AQP’s data can be integrated with information from other public entities and service providers to manage emergencies in a unified manner.
This innovative structure is explicitly future-oriented and stands out as one of the few of its kind in Europe.
The AQP Control Room operates 24/7. It comprises two areas: the Control Room —divided into operator zones and specialized workstations—and a Crisis-Decision Room, separated by soundproof glass walls.
The primary output system is a massive 7x2-meter Video Wall with 8K resolution, built from 18 modules. It serves as the core for data visualization and sharing
The graphics controller, designed and built within the data center, enables video signal transmission to and from other stations within the room and receives Over-IP video signals from remote monitoring stations. The onboard software can be controlled from a web interface and allows for customized layouts and specific viewing presets while enabling remote control of local applications through keyboard and mouse functionalities.
The audio system serves the entire space. It comprises five 3.5” full-range speakers, a passive subwoofer, and amplifiers.
Twelve workstations have been set up to support operators. Each of them is equipped with dual 24” displays and rack-mounted workstations housed within the data center.
All workstations are integrated into a network architecture based on KVM Over-IP technology to manage specific operational activities remotely. This allows 4K audio and video streaming with zero latency and the distribution of 4K video to other workstations, whether local or remote, or the main visualization system without loss in quality.
With a view toward future expansion, this system offers virtually unlimited scalability within a unified ecosystem.
A Crisis Room was created alongside the main control room to meet AQP’s need for a dedicated critical decision-making space. This room facilitates data exchange with the control room while aggregating information from the field for informed decision-making during emergencies.
Key features include an 86” multi-touch, multi-user tactical table and an 86” interactive wall-mounted display.
Both devices are equipped with the Touchviewer real-time collaboration platform, enabling real-time information and document sharing across AQP’s operational structures, even in remote locations. This platform also creates intelligent dashboards to display data such as maps, diagrams, and tables for easy comprehension.
Additional features include a BYOD-enabled video conferencing and content-sharing system for remote collaboration.
AQP sought a single provider for a comprehensive physical and digital setup, where technical furnishings can be seamlessly integrated with technological systems to create a cohesive, user-friendly environment.
Touchwindow also selected the furnishings, balancing ergonomics and aesthetics. In line with sustainability and circular economy principles, all furnishings were chosen based on their use, from 24/7-certified office chairs to comfortable, design-focused seating for meeting rooms and visitors.
The result is a harmonious physical and digital, setup that transforms the control room into a collaborative nexus and a showcase for AQP’s partners, clients, and suppliers.
The AQP Control Room is a permanent operational hub, ensuring business continuity and technical support for stakeholder reports.
These strategically critical environments demand flawless operation. To address any issues, Touchwindow tailored a service package that includes rapid-response solutions for malfunctions, supported by redundancy measures and technical workarounds to maintain system continuity.
A dedicated monitoring system, managed via our internal NOC, is complemented by a Help Desk offering remote or phone support in emergencies. For less critical needs, clients can use our web-based ticketing platform to request assistance via the Service Desk.
Our technical team provides on-site assistance for prompt and effective interventions, ensuring seamless operations at all times.
